It’s no secret that porn has had a mighty hand in driving the adoption of new technologies over the years. The adult industry played a big part in the early days of the VCR, the development of cable television, HD video, and of course, the internet. It’s not as though the adult industry is creating these new technologies, they’re merely taking advantage of new developments before others, putting them in position to be on the leading edge of technology. And of course, the main audience for porn has traditionally been young men, a consumer group that tends to be more willing to take on the risk and expense of adopting new technology early on. So, when virtual reality porn started to hit their inboxes and landing pages, it shouldn’t have come as any surprise that this new technology took off and soared beyond anyone’s expectations.

With the development of VR technologies and the subsequent growth of the VR headset market, studios are getting in on this new niche and helping grow the overall VR industry.A recent report from Pornhub showed that their VR content, which started at 30 videos and has quickly grown to over 2,600 in the past year, now gets over 500,000 views a day. It’s a substantial increase for a years’ time and something that Pornhub execs are counting on to help diversify their business. Corey Price, VP of Pornhub, sees VR as an immersive technology with the potential to go far.

He sees the technology expanding to include not only VR but also augmented reality and teledildonics. And the result will hopefully be a change from passive observer to active participant in the stories presented. While this type of immersion won’t necessarily be restricted to adult interpretations, porn will most likely continue to be a leading force that drives the change in virtual reality.

Who’s Watching VR Porn?

According to a recent poll, if you’ve got a VR headset then there’s a very good chance that you’ve used it to check out some VR porn. In fact, they claim that over 78% of all VR headset owners have used them to watch some naughty VR, and in the same report claims that 75% of headset owners own a mobile VR viewer like the Samsung GearVR or the Google Cardboard. These relatively inexpensive headsets (as opposed to the pricier HTC VIVE or Oculus Rift) have made it possible for VR to penetrate a plethora of households, making it easier to access VR porn. In fact, sites like Pornhub and Badoink have seen their greatest increases directly after Christmas, when so many of these headsets make their way under the Christmas tree.

So What’s Next For VR Porn?

The majority of VR porn is fairly static, presenting a familiar POV style scene with the actress performing in front of you. Users can expect this to change as the technology advances, and it will likely do so at an astonishing pace. With the demand for less static action will come advances in camera rigs that will easily transfer to other VR applications.
At the recent 2017 XBIZ conference in West Hollywood, the annual industry conference, attendees were abuzz about the prospects of VR in the adult industry. Alec Helmy, the founder of XBIZ even stated that he believes virtual reality will be the next big thing for the adult industry, eventually making traditional recorded 2D porn obsolete.
